The world was very different in 2001. John Howard was Prime Minister, Britney and Justin were still a couple and the Apple iPod had just been released. But most importantly, in 2001, same-sex marriage was illegal in Australia (and it would be for more than a decade, until Australia came to its senses).
Michael and Jarrad have been together for this entire period; they’ve built a life together and are the proud parents to their son, Reid. So, you can only imagine the pure joy, love and happy tears that filled the room on this magical autumn day. Michael and Jarrad tied the knot in Melbourne’s CBD, 18 years after finding each other in Tasmania. They celebrated accordingly (in matching sequin blazers, naturally) but not before a touching ceremony finalised by Reid (who declared them “finally married”) and a few heartfelt words from their favourite people.
This is a couple that have already achieved so much together, but it was nothing short of an honour to witness one more accomplishment to top the list: marriage. And we suspect a long one at that.
